Your client is doing everything right. Box breathing in the morning, the cold plunge, the magnesium spray before bed, maybe even the somatic therapy you referred her to. And she’s still wired at 2pm, still lying awake at 2am, still snapping at her kids over nothing.
She asks what she’s doing wrong, and you don’t have a clean answer. So you tell her to stay consistent and give it time. And underneath that you think: she is consistent. So why isn’t her body letting go?
The tools aren’t the problem. The tank is. You can send every calming practice in the world into a body that doesn’t have the raw materials to run them, and it will hit a ceiling every time. Because “supporting the nervous system,” the phrase we all reach for, is underneath mostly a mineral conversation.
I learned this watching clients who were doing all the right things and still couldn’t get calm. The breathwork helped a little. The magnesium spray helped a little. Nothing really moved until we looked at what their nervous system was actually built from and started putting it back.
The nervous system is an electrical system
Strip it all the way down and your nervous system is electrical. Every thought, every heartbeat, every “calm down” signal is a small electrical current moving along a nerve. And that current doesn’t run on breathwork. It runs on minerals.
A nerve fires when sodium rushes into the cell and potassium moves out. Calcium tells the cell when to release its neurotransmitters. Magnesium sits over the whole system like a brake, keeping it from firing more than it should. These aren’t background players. They are the electricity. No minerals, no signal.
Magnesium is the brake pedal
If one mineral runs the calm, it’s magnesium. It’s a cofactor in hundreds of reactions, and a lot of them are the ones that tell an overexcited nervous system to settle. Blood sugar belongs in this same conversation. When someone’s blood sugar crashes, the body pumps out adrenaline and cortisol to rescue it, and that surge feels exactly like anxiety. A client can breathe through it all she wants, but if she’s running on coffee and a granola bar with no minerals to hold the line, her nervous system will keep sounding the alarm. Protein, salt, and the right minerals do more for that 2pm spiral than another breathing app.
The wired minerals: copper and calcium
Not every mineral calms you down. Some rev you up, and when they fall out of balance they can hold a nervous system in overdrive.
Copper is the one I watch most. When copper runs high and zinc can’t keep pace with it, people often feel anxious, emotionally reactive, quick to tears or to anger. I’ve seen a child’s daily meltdowns settle just from bringing that ratio back toward balance. Calcium plays a part too. It’s excitatory at the cellular level, and when it stacks up, often as a kind of shell over a depleted system, it can bury the very stress a person is trying to release. You can’t relax your way out of a mineral pattern that’s keeping the lights on.

None of this makes the breathwork pointless. Somatic work, vagal toning, cold exposure, therapy, they’re real and they matter. But they’re tools that act on a system, and the system is built from minerals. Ask a depleted body to regulate and it can only do so much, no matter how good the technique.
Fill the tank first and the rest starts working better. The breathwork lands. Sleep deepens. The practices you were already recommending finally have something to act on. Minerals are the foundation the rest of it stands on.
Which is why I look at minerals first
When a client comes to me wired, anxious, and exhausted, I don’t start by adding more practices to her plate. I look at her minerals. An HTMA shows me the actual pattern: whether her magnesium is buried, whether her sodium and potassium are on the floor, whether copper is running the show. From there I’m not guessing at which calming trick might help. I’m rebuilding the specific foundation her nervous system has been missing.
It also keeps me squarely in scope. I’m not diagnosing anxiety or treating a disorder. I’m reading a mineral pattern and supporting the foundation underneath it, which is exactly where a practitioner is meant to work.
