If you’ve been in this work for even a little while, you’ve met this client. She walks in with a binder. Or a Google Doc with color-coded tabs. She’s done the elimination diet, the gut protocol, the adrenal cocktail, the fancy adaptogens, the supplement stack that costs more than her car payment. She’s tried everything, and she says that word with a specific kind of exhaustion, because she means it.
And here’s the trap that’s so easy to fall into, especially when you’re newer and want to prove you can help: you start looking for the next thing. A better protocol. A more advanced strategy. The missing supplement nobody’s thought of yet.
But most of the time, that’s not what she needs. She doesn’t need a new protocol. She needs a foundation.
The problem with stacking protocols on an empty tank
Think about what a protocol actually asks the body to do. Detox this. Kill that. Rebuild the gut lining. Balance these hormones. Every one of those jobs takes energy, and energy at the cellular level runs on minerals. Magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, and the rest aren’t side characters. They’re the spark plugs. They’re what let the body actually carry out the work you’re asking it to do.
So when a client has been running low on minerals for years, layering another protocol on top is like flooring the gas pedal in a car with an empty tank. You might hear the engine strain. You won’t get very far. And she’ll walk away thinking, once again, that nothing works for her, when really her body never had what it needed to respond in the first place.
This is why so many clients feel like they’re doing all the “right” things and still not getting better. It’s not that the protocols were wrong. It’s that the foundation underneath them was never there.
What mineral balance actually changes
When you shift the focus to minerals first, a few things tend to happen, and they’re the kind of things that make a client finally feel hopeful again.
Reactions calm down. So many of the sensitivities and “I can’t tolerate anything” struggles ease up when the body has more mineral reserve to work with. Energy comes back, because you’re supporting the actual machinery that produces it. Sleep, mood, digestion, and stress tolerance often start to settle too, because minerals touch all of it. And here’s the part I love most: things she couldn’t tolerate before sometimes become possible, because now her body has the resources to handle them.
You’re not adding more. You’re building the thing everything else was supposed to stand on.
The best part: this is simpler than it sounds
I know that when you’re new, “get the foundations right” can feel almost too simple to be the answer. We’re wired to think the real skill is in the complicated stuff. But I promise you, learning to read a client’s mineral picture and support it well is one of the most powerful things you will ever do as a practitioner. It’s not flashy. It just works.
And you don’t have to have every mineral interaction memorized to start. You have to be willing to slow down, look at what her body is actually telling you, and resist the urge to reach for the next protocol before the foundation is solid. That restraint, honestly, is the advanced move. Anyone can add more. Knowing when to build the base first is what sets a great practitioner apart.
Where HTMA comes in
This is exactly where HTMA earns its place in your practice. It shows you the mineral patterns and the stress story underneath the symptoms, so you’re not guessing at which foundation is cracked. You can see it. And once you can see it, the plan gets simple: support the minerals, support the nervous system, go at a pace her body can actually keep up with.
So the next time a client hands you the binder and the long list of everything she’s already tried, take a breath before you go looking for the next thing. Sometimes the most healing move isn’t adding another protocol. It’s finally giving her body the foundation it’s been missing all along.
That’s not just good practice. That’s the whole reason this work works.
