If you’ve ever had a client say, “My doctor said hair testing isn’t accurate,” or a practitioner friend raise an eyebrow when you mention HTMA, you’re not alone.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is one of those misunderstood tools that sparks curiosity, confusion, or outright criticism—especially from people used to more conventional testing. And if you’re new to using HTMA or still finding your confidence in explaining it, those conversations can feel intimidating.

Here’s what I’ve learned after running hundreds of these tests and mentoring practitioners who use them every day: you don’t need to convince anyone. You just need to explain what HTMA does—and doesn’t do—in a way that’s transparent and aligned with how you practice.

Start With What HTMA Actually Measures

I always like to keep this part simple. HTMA measures how minerals and metals are being deposited into the hair over time. It’s not a one-day snapshot like blood—it’s a reflection of what’s been going on inside the tissues over the past 8 to 12 weeks.
That difference matters. Because while blood levels are tightly regulated (your body will pull minerals from tissues to keep blood levels looking normal), HTMA shows us how your body is adapting to stress and maintaining balance long-term.
It’s not a replacement for blood testing. It gives a different perspective. A complementary one.

Speak to the Limitations Before They Do

This is something I had to learn early on—you gain credibility by acknowledging what the test can’t do.
If someone asks me, “What can this actually tell you?” I say something like:
“HTMA isn’t a diagnostic test, and I don’t use it to diagnose or treat disease. What it does really well is show us how your body is handling stress, energy, and mineral balance over time. It gives us a starting point to support your foundation—things like sleep, blood sugar, digestion, and resilience—so your body has the raw materials it needs to function better.”
Being honest about what the test can and can’t do builds more trust than over-explaining.

Explain Why You Use It First

People want to understand your thought process. Why this test, and why now?
Here’s how I usually explain it:
“I like to start with HTMA because minerals are involved in nearly every system—your hormones, nervous system, digestion, detox, energy. If we skip over the foundation, more advanced testing often ends up showing downstream effects without telling us why the body is stuck in the first place.”
And honestly? HTMA is one of the most cost-effective, non-invasive ways to look at what’s happening inside the cells—especially before jumping into things like DUTCH or GI-MAP.

Share a Real-Life Example

You don’t need to bust out charts and data. Just share something simple and relatable:
“I had a client who came in with fatigue, anxiety, and period issues. Her regular labs were all normal. But her HTMA showed low potassium, high calcium, and a Four Lows pattern—classic signs of burnout. Once we supported her minerals and simplified her routine, her energy and cycles started to improve within a few months.”
People connect with results more than data.

Don’t Get Defensive

It’s tempting to defend the test when someone challenges it, especially if you’ve seen it work. But confidence doesn’t come from being right. It comes from being clear.
Here’s something I might say if someone pushes back:
“Totally fair question. HTMA isn’t for everyone, and there are definitely outdated opinions about it out there. But when we use a high-quality lab, interpret it through patterns and ratios, and combine it with intake and symptoms, it gives us incredible insight into what the body is prioritizing. And when we support that? Clients start feeling better.”

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to overcomplicate HTMA. And you definitely don’t need to justify using it.
Just be honest. Be clear. And speak from your experience.
This test may not be flashy. But it consistently helps me and the practitioners I mentor support real people in real life—especially the ones who’ve tried everything else and still feel off.
